I saw my first SG in 1975. I was just a tender 15 years old and even though I saw it in church (see the vid for the whole story) I remember thinking it looked “bad ass”. I’m always surprised by the players that end up using them. Zac Childs from “Ask Zac” hipped me to Nashville session guys Tom Bukovac and Kenny Greenberg use them in the studio and on stage. Eric Johnson and Robben Ford have both used them out on the road. The depth of users of the SG is upsurpassed.

And as is often the case, I need to thank Perry McManis and Dave Onorato for editing another big script.

Thanks for watching.

Until next time, thanks for being a part of the five watt world.

Gibson SG Standard vs. Epiphone SG Standard | Is Epiphone Closing the Gap?

Today we’re checking out two SGs Epiphone and Gibson. Finally the “SG” in Epiphone’s line has the name to go along with it! This body style is as about as old as electric guitar history, and we’re happy to have two choices that live up to the famous distinction. At a hardtoignore price difference, however, it’s worth it to compare these two and talk about which one is a better value to the average guitar player. Listen to the demos and let us know what you think!

  1. I initially hated the feel of the SG’s and told myself as I was learning guitar I told myself I would never buy one, ten years later I know am seriously considering buying one after messing around with a bunch of them, they feel comfortable and with the college student budget I have it really is looking like a great guitar for years to come! To some it might look weird or small or what not but it packs some serious tone, and because of how it is built it resonates better than any instrument that I have played

  2. Finally saved up enough to buy a brand new S.G standard, and although i have always wanted one i keep debating back and forth about whether or not to buy one or settle for something much less like an epi S.G and just be satisfied with that. Anybody who has owned a Gibby S.G for a long time and has alot of experience with it please tell me if you think they're worth what they cost now and if you'd plunk down that much cash all over again. Would love to know what you experienced guys think!

  3. ..I got four of this rock machines and another one will join the gang, soon 😉
    …don´t underestimate the SG Special…
A couple years back i bought a black one with classic 57 PU´s from 2006 or 2007 and this is the last guitar I would ever sell – perfect rocknroll machine!

  4. [rolling eyes]
It’s time to decide where you want to go with guitar…as far as Gibson SG’s go, there’s a lot of people who LOVE them… but at the same time, Les Paul (who designed the SG) HATED IT one of the best SG performances in guitar history is Carlos Santana’s 1969 Woodstock performance of Soul Sacrifice I was born in September, 1985, I started playing guitar in March of 1988…I’ve had Les Pauls, Flying V’s, Explorers, Strats, Telecasters, SG’s, Hollow Body’s, Charvels, Jacksons, Kramers, Deans, Gretchs, Guilds, shred guitars, Floyd Rose equipped guitars, Kahler equipped guitars, hard tail guitars, Lyre & Maestro vibrato’s, bigsby’s, I’ve never had a single tremolo or vibrato return to tune EVER…and I’ve tried all the tricks; Locking Tuners, Locking Nuts, Roller Nuts, Roller Saddles, Graphite Nuts (TUSQ) & Teflon Impregnated nuts (TUSQ XL)… you know what stays in tune? The guitar strapped around me right now; a Fender Custom Shop Set Neck Rear-Routed Nocaster outfitted with a Seymour Duncan ‘59 Humbucker in the neck position, a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus humbucker in the bridge position, a string-through body hard tail 6 individual saddle bridge, a push-pull 500K Audio Taper volume pot for coil tapping, a push-pull 500k linear taper tone pot to change pickup polarity (so the volume pot pulled out makes it so only 1 half of the humbucker is active & the tone pot pulled out switches which side of the humbucker is active…)

  5. Hey Robert I bought a Gibson sg new in 2018 basically for the same reason you mentioned. There are 2 basic complaints on my behalf, first the ugly disgusting brown fake leather bag/case or whatever ever it’s supposed to be, second the circuitry, why on earth did Gibson put circuit boards in there guitars? I know to be cheap. The problems are the guitar buzzes like a single coil, also it’s impossible to change pickups without changing the whole wiring system. I recently put it for sale for these reasons. Have you had any problems with the wiring and buzzing? Thanks for your video

  6. Glad you kept it because YOU inspired me to dive deeper into my epiphone SG. I had a Gibson SG standard which I thought I would love a few years back- but didn't. I started listening to alot of bands that played SG style guitars(always loved the shape). Fell in love with but went with a more cost conscious approach. Happily, my epiphone sg does not disappoint!! Love it!

  7. The reason an SG felt “moved over” could be due to the construction. The body route that forms the “waist” is between the two pickups on a Les Paul but is right under the bridge pickup on the SG.

  8. Look at the amazing music Derek Trucks does with one. I've been to hundreds of concerts in my lifetime. Number one live guitar solo was Derek while in the Allman Brothers in Orange Beach Alabama. Amazing tone.

  9. I went round and round convinced I had to love a les Paul. Hated the way the body dove in the back….. never found the right one etc. I have since learned I'm a SG guy. I have two. A 77 and a 1995 standard. Love my hard rocking SGs.

  10. The same pick ups in the thinner body and not maple top will sound different. Plexi tones really make it come alive, far more than an LP. Everyone should own one, same as an LP
