Why Is The Avila Pier Closed: Exploring The Closure

On May 31, 2023, the lower portion of Front Street beneath the Inn at Avila Beach underwent a significant transformation. This involved the demolition of several structures, with only two buildings, namely the Avila Market and the Yacht Club, being relocated and later reinstated. In the process, a staggering 200,000 tons of sand contaminated with oil were excavated. Following the cleanup operation, the tanks were dismantled, with the initial one being cut down using industrial shears in December 1997. This endeavor marked a crucial milestone in the restoration and revitalization of Avila Beach.

The closure of the OB pier has been a recurrent issue in recent years, primarily stemming from damage inflicted during severe storms and periods of high surf. Most notably, it underwent a temporary closure from January 2023 to July 2023. However, it managed to reopen just in time for its 57th anniversary, marking a significant milestone for the beloved structure. This closure was part of a series of maintenance efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of the pier for the community’s continued enjoyment.
